Yes, but no test for Emotional Intelligence is nearly as concrete and sound as the test for IQ. Well-established and trusted tests exist to determine a person’s IQ, or Intelligence Quotient. Various tests exist, but the idea remains the same. You can determine how smart a person is by testing him or her on certain areas and comparing the score to those of others who have taken the same test. A quick search online will yield literally millions of sites that offer or try to explain IQ tests.

However, the same is not true for Emotional Intelligence, or your Emotional Quotient. Some tests do exist, but most often people determine your EQ based on gut feeling. It’s difficult to put a rating, or score, to such soft skills as how you cope with stress, how you empathize with others, how you motivate yourself, and so on. One test, the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal, was designed based upon the research of—and with the permission of—Daniel Goleman. This test measures EQ based on four core skills: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

These four skills are based upon the model created by Daniel Goleman--with his permission. His model is a competency-based framework that is intuitive and easy to apply in real-world settings. The Emotional Intelligence Appraisal™ has a strong link to job performance. Found at www.talentsmart.com, the test focuses on how people behave in a professional setting. Other tests exist, with varying degrees of accuracy, professionalism, and costs.
