IQ measures the degree of cognitive intelligence a person possesses. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the person will succeed in life, though. A person with a high IQ is smart, sure. He or she likely does very well in school. But without such soft skills as motivation, empathy, emotional processing, the ability to manage relationships, restraint, hope, and optimism, the smart person doesn’t know how to manage his or her professional and personal relationships.
Essentially, EQ measures personal skills. IQ measures overall intelligence. The person who possesses high IQ and EQ is the person in the best position to succeed in life. Cognitive intelligence will help you do well in a job, because you have the intelligence you need to do the job well and to be innovative, creative, and precise. But if you had to pick between being emotionally or intellectually gifted, these experts would probably say that EQ is the way to go.
Having Emotional Intelligence doesn’t mean you’re an emotional person. It doesn’t mean you’re soft, or that you’re driven by your emotions. Rather, it means that you’re able to get along well with people. It means you have good communication skills, and that you’re able to read other people and determine the best way to handle the situation based on their emotions or feelings. You often are better able to cope with stress. Being Emotionally Intelligent means you have the skills needed to deal with people—including yourself.
