Start by taking a personal inventory. Take stock in what you like and don’t like while on the job.
- Make a list of things you do not like about your current job. Be honest without blaming your dissatisfaction on the job or your coworkers.
- Take stock in what you like while on the job. What would your dream job be like? Do you thrive on a fast-paced, deadline-driven schedule or do you like to work thoughtfully until a single project is complete, then move on to the next? Are you a quick decision-maker who never wastes time on second-guessing?
- With your personal inventory in hand, make another list, highlighting your skills and abilities. Don’t limit this list to skills involved in the job you have now and don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. You are the only one who will see this list.
- Think about your financial goals. Do you want to spend more time with family, to quickly build your child’s college fund or to put away as much as possible for retirement? Are you looking for stability and a dependable routine or flexibility that will allow for travel and leisure pursuits?
Write a job description for your dream job. Include things like salary and benefits. Keep in mind that you want to qualify for the job you describe. If you have not been to medical school then “Neurosurgeon” may not be the most logical next step on your career path. However, if that is your ultimate goal, then write it down and make a plan to get there.
