In our modern economy, change is necessary. The business that is able to adapt its message to a constantly changing community will succeed. To meet this challenge, businesses turn to creativity. At heart, creativity is simply thinking of new and varied solutions to challenges. Even a company with decades of success must continue to meet problems of all types with all types of solutions.

As an example, consider the advertising strategies of even the fast food industry: Several years ago, Arby’s advertised “Different is good” and at present Taco Bell urges Americans to “Think outside the bun.” Burger King meanwhile, continues to prompt customers to “Have it your way.” McDonald’s continually advertises its latest promotional game while Wendy’s regularly brings out new menu items for “a limited time only.” Each of these restaurants argues that it is the creative one. If the customer wants to try something new, he/she should come to this restaurant.

Fortunately (and contrary to some fears), creativity is not limited to child geniuses. Anyone can have creativity because creativity is simply thinking in a new direction. Come up with as many different solutions to a problem as you can. Consider combinations and connections that have not been tried before. Regardless of the way something has been done in the past, think of how you could do a job more quickly or efficiently than ever before. Anyone can think in this manner.

Creativity generally refers to the initial spark of ideas, and there’s no such thing as a bad idea when you’re thinking creatively. Later, you can move on to discriminate between ideas and to practically think about implementing a chosen idea. At this point, you move into the field of innovation, which is the implementation a new idea. Coming up with the new idea, though, belongs to the realm of creativity.
