Investing in continuing education is important, but as with any investment you want to be sure you are spending your time and money in the best way possible.

Check with your professional association, as some have offered guidelines about continuing education programs. Also check with fellow people in your area of business about their experiences – both positive and negative – with continuing education programs.

Consider your learning style in determining whether to enroll in a traditional classroom program or in an e-learning program, which perhaps requires more self motivation.
Also consider time and geography issues – e-learning can essentially bring a university to you, which can add convenience.

If you choose to enroll in an e-learning program, evaluate the program based on these criteria:

  • Do I have the computer hardware and software required to complete the course?
  • Do they offer tech support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is it reliable?
  • Do they offer tutorials to help you learn how to navigate the program?
  • Do they offer a virtual library and bookstore?
  • How many students will be in the class or program?
  • Do you have access to the instructor?
  • What are the requirements of the class and the time limitations?
