While traditionally financial aid was reserved for undergraduate-age students enrolled in colleges and universities, the changing landscape of education with distance learning and continuing education means that sources of financial aid are increasingly available to adult learners.

Do your research with the institution where you choose to enroll in continuing education. Talk to someone in the financial aid office to determine your options.

Also seek information from these sources:

  • Your employer: Many employers offer financial assistance to their employees for further education and training. Talk with someone in your human resources department about tuition reimbursement and other options. Be sure to get all the information, as some employers limit this benefit to training that directly relates to your job or graduate level courses. Some also require you to earn a certain grade. Also remember that if you have been offered a new job and are in negotiations for salary and benefits, which is the perfect opportunity to negotiate tuition reimbursement. Employers may be willing to sweeten the deal they already offer in order to attract you to the company. They also will be impressed with your desire to continue to learn and improve.
  • Federal and state aid: Investigate the money that may be available to you through loans or financial aid.
  • Private scholarships, assistantships, internships and work-study: There can be many sources of aid available through businesses and other community organizations.

Regardless of the aid that is available to you, remember that money spent on education could be the best investment you ever make.
