How should I advance and develop my career?

There are many stages to career planning, and while many people are busy starting their career plan or changing their plan, others are already in exactly the career they want. A career plan does not simply begin and end with picking the right career; your career plan should keep you going down the right career path. In other words, where do you go from here? How do you improve a career that you already enjoy?

The first question to ask yourself may be just that, “What could make my career better?” Are there additional opportunities you would like? Would you like freedom to take more personal initiative or would you like more responsibility regarding work projects? What would improve your relationships with co-workers or clients?

If one of these situations describes how you feel, consider how you can take the next step. If you want to take more initiative, start mentioning some of your ideas to your superiors and see how they are received. If you want additional job responsibilities, consider which current responsibilities you could delegate in order to take on new ones. Challenge yourself to do more than is expected of you; challenge yourself to try some new territory.

Another possible career advancement is a promotion. A promotion means added responsibility and added pay, and in many cases, it makes for a more fulfilling job. Don’t assume a promotion will make your career perfect, but a new position may need to be the next step in your career plan. If you do want a promotion, work hard enough at your current job to show you deserve it and don’t be afraid to ask supervisors what you can do to take that next career step.

No matter what career you have, you will likely grow complacent at some point. If that is the case, you may not need to switch careers, you may just need to go to the next step in your career plan. Challenge yourself to mold your career to exactly your passions, your values, and your skills.
