There may be times when it seems like no matter how hard you work, you are not getting the opportunity to advance. If this is the case for you, there are several steps you can take. They are as follows:

  • Evaluate your performance. Take a moment to evaluate yourself and your performance over the past six months. How many projects have you completed successfully? Have you been in leadership positions? Have you taken the necessary steps to advance your career? See if there is anything that you can think of that you need to improve on.
  • Talk to a supervisor. If you think that you deserve career advancement, set up an appointment with your supervisor to get evaluated. When you go in for evaluation, be sure and have a portfolio ready of the things that you have done for the company and how well you did them. Show the portfolio to you supervisor and tell him or her why you feel you should be promoted. Remember, never be afraid to ask questions. Your supervisor will be able to give you reasons why you have not been able to advance and might even be able to tell you when you will be able to advance. If there are improvements that need to be made, be sure and write those down so you can work on them. Your supervisor will be able to give you information on how and when you can advance.
  • Change jobs. If you have completed the steps above and still feel as if you are not getting the advancement you deserve, a job change may be necessary. When looking for a new job, make sure it is something you feel qualified for and something that you are interested in. Also, make sure the company you apply for has opportunity for advancement
