When learning how to advance your career, it is very easy to get the topic confused with career development. Although the two do have some similarities, they are in fact very different. First, let’s take a look at what career development is.

Career development is the act of making career decisions. It is something that you can participate in whether you have an exact idea or no ideas about what you want to do. It often involves self assessment, career exploration, reality testing, and the development of job search strategies. In short, career development is the act of becoming aware of what you are doing or want to be doing, and accessing the tools to make the job you want a reality.

This is different from advancing your career because when you make the decision to advance your career you already have a career in mind. The two terms work hand in hand, however, because career development would help you get the job and get it started, while career advancement would help you get promotions in that job.
