In the United States, most employees want more than what they have right now. They are constantly looking for ways to climb the corporate ladder� or advance their careers. There are several steps that one can take in order to advance his or her career and some examples are as follows:


  • Always set higher goals for yourself. Once you have mastered the current job that you are working on, ask for a new challenge. Always be stretching yourself and increasing your abilities through new projects.
  • Ask for input. Don't just wait for a supervisor to tell you how you are doing. Once you have completed a project, make an appointment with your boss and ask him or her for critiques. This will give your boss the opportunity to let you know how you can improve. Once you know these things, you can improve your work and look forward to advancement.
  • Learn new skills. Surf the net, read new books, or sign up for a college class. This will allow you to learn new skills and keep you updated on new technology that will make you valuable to your company.
  • Increase your visibility. Make time for the people that you work with and make yourself available to help them. This will not only make you a favorite around the office but will make you a team player which is very important when it comes to promotions within a company.
  • Analyze your communication skills. Evaluate your behaviors when communicating to people. This includes your words as well as your nonverbals. Good communication skills are vital for a person who wants to advance in their career.
  • Believe in yourself. Be confident with your abilities. Someone who is not confident will never take risks. Risks will stretch you and make you a better worker.
  • Be willing to relocate. Always be available for anything your supervisor asks you for. Be flexible because often you must be moved in order to get promoted.
  • Go above and beyond. Don't just do what your boss tells you to do and that's it. Take whatever you are assigned to the next level. Do not just do the bare minimum, but research ways that you can make what you are assigned to do better.
