Vibrations and Shakes

It's a bad sign when your car's theme song is Jerry Lee Lewis's "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." Even if you don't have any major shaking problems, however, the minor vibrations from your car (which you probably don't even notice anymore) to may indicate a need for car repairs that are worth having done.

• Vibration between 50 and 70 mph: One of your wheels is out of balance. If the vibration comes from the steering wheel, a front wheel is the problem. If the vibration comes from your seat, a rear wheel is to blame. You'll need a mechanic to rebalance your wheels.
• Drifting to the left or right: You may just be on a banked road, but in many cases, your alignment needs to be repaired. Faulty alignment is not a major concern, but it causes uneven wear on your tires and it can be a safety hazard.
• Multiple bounces after a road dip: You have worn shocks or struts. Replace them and you'll have a much smoother ride.
• Vibration during hard braking: Anti-lock brake systems in particular have this problem, for the brakes quickly engage and release in order to prevent lock-ups. New disc brake rotors might alleviate the problem, however.
