The reason the GSM system is so popular is because it has higher digital voice quality and operates at lower cost. If it wasn't for GSMs low cost features, text messaging would not be possible. Also GSM allows customers to use different vendors without sacrificing the ability to communicate with other people. This way a customer can travel to another country and still use his/her cell phone with no problem.
