High season in Rio de Janeiro is December to the end of March with the peak being New Year’s Eve and Carnival, February 28th – March 3. The low season is the remainder of the year, with July and August considered mid-seasons, partly due to the national school mid-year holidays and the European and United States tourist coming during their summer vacation. Vacationing during the low season will save you about 20 percent off of the high season rates on lodging, and could almost double coming during New Year’s Eve or Carnival.
To properly explore Rio, you need at least 9 days, not counting the fact that you’ll most likely want to unwind for a few days at the beach before sight-seeing. If you take into consideration the various nearby attractions, 14 days would be the minimum to leave Rio feeling like you did all of the essentials.
The American dollar tends to last 2 ½ times longer in Rio than in the United States. Most American tourists spend an average of $70 per day, not including lodging.
