Rio is hardly considered a beach resort, but the beaches play a very important role in the Carioca lifestyle.

Praia do Pepino in Sao Conrado is where hang gliders land, after jumping off Pedra Bonita Hill. Barra da Tijuca is where Rio’s youth meet. Prainha is a tiny beach that is a favorite with surfers. Grumari is a reserve and you can see a portion of the native Atlantic Forest. The water is very clean, and the sand is coarse and white. Depending on the season you may see small white crabs.
