California is not the only hot surfing spot in the world. Rio has a number of good spots to catch a few waves. And if the waves aren’t as big as they are in Hawaii, the water is certainly warmer than Vancouver Island. The surfing beach closest to the main part of Rio is Arpoador Beach in Ipanema. The waves are between 3 foot to 10 foot. Surfing is pretty popular with the locals in Arpoador, between Copacabana and Ipanema, is where most surfers congregate.
The beach at Sao Conrado is off and on. Sometimes there are 6 ½ foot waves and sometimes it is dead. The main surf beach in Barra de Tijuca is Barra-Mejo, a ½ mile long stretch in the middle of the beach. The waves average around 6 foot. If you bring your board and just need the transportation, there is a surf bus that departs the Largo do Machado going along Copacabana, Arpoador, Sao Conrado, and Barra de Tijuca before returning. If you need to rent a board, you can rent short boards, fun boards, and long boards for $6 to $10 per day. You will need to book ahead if you want a board on the weekend. If you are interested in surfing lessons there are a couple of instructors in Rio. But true to the surfer nature, they don’t have phones so you will have to go find them, usually at Pepe’s Shack in Barraca do Pepe. Private lessons run around $10 per hour.
