Rio is great for hiking and offers some outstanding nature walks. Visitors can hike one of the many trails through Floresta da Tijuca or head to one of the three National Parks within a few hours of the city. It is recommended you go with a guide for a number of obvious reasons, getting lost and being robbed being at the top of the list. In recent years, there has been a boom in organized hikes around the city, including hikes through wilderness areas around Corcovado, Morro da Urca, Pao de Acucar and Tijuca.

Rio Hiking offers guided hiking trips to most of Rio’s peaks. The 4-hour Sugarloaf trip includes a short stretch of rock climbing and costs about $40. The 6-hour Pedra da Gavea hike offers terrific views, a waterfall in the middle, and an ocean dip at the end at a cost of $45. The Tijuca Forest tour involves a jeep tour of the forest, stopping at a waterfall and a couple of lookouts and a 2-hour hike to Pico de Tijuca and is less strenuous at a cost of $45.
