Today will be a day of culture. Start out at the Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da II Guerra Mundial. This monument is home to a museum for World War II artifacts. It is guarded by the three Armed Forces and contains a mausoleum and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Next, head over to the Casa do Pontal. This museum is dedicated to Brazilian folk art and has around 5,000 sculptures from more than 200 artists. The International Council of Museums considers it an anthropological museum largely because the artwork reflects so many aspects of Brazilian life and culture. There is also a garden on site, which displays several different species of flora and fauna. Guided tours are offered in four languages. The museum also has a bookstore and a coffee shop. Admission is BRR5.
If you haven’t soaked up enough Brazilian culture yet, visit the Foraleza de Sao Joao. This elaborate stone gate was built in 1618. In 1872, it was remodeled and modern weapons were installed among the 15 cannons. The only thing that re mains today is the old gate and some ruins. Foraleza de Sao Joao also has its own private beach for use by the military staff.
