Technology in Brazil began to develop in the early part of the nineteenth century when the royal family of Portugal moved to Brazil to escape Napoleon’s army. Today, Brazil is doing well in the area of science and technology. Many universities, research centers and institutions, and private institutions are conducting basic research projects. Ninety percent of the funding for these projects comes from the government.

There are several companies that have established large R&D&I centers in Brazil, namely IBM, Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia. The IBM Research Center was established in Brazil in the 1970’s.

Brazil has important technology poles located at the following sites: Sao Jose dos Campos, Campinas, Sao Carols, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, and Sao Paulo.
