Sao Paulo has the highest population of any city in South America and is one of the five most populous countries in the world. Residents of the city are called paulistanos. Sao Paulo is known for its cuisine, ranging from Chinese to French, fast food chains to five-star restaurants. It is also a major center for business with a multicultural metropolitan area. Many different cultures have influenced the area, including Italian, Spaniard, Portuguese, German, Arab, and Japanese. There are several important events that take place in Sao Paulo, including the Shoes and Sports Items International Fair; the Textile Industry International Fair; the Construction International Fair; the Shoes, Fashion Accessories, and Machines International Fair; the Cosmetics and Beauty International Fair; the Lodging-related products International Fair; the Car International Fair; and the International Book Fair.
Curitiba has a population of 1,757,904 people and is made up of 28 municipalities. The people of Curitiba are known by other Brazilians for their regional accent. The city has an excellent transportation system, including a bus rapid transit system, and is held as a paragon of urban planning excellence. The climate is subtropical, but residents of Curitiba claim that the weather is unpredictable. Because of its altitude, it is one of the coldest cities in Brazil. Some of the notable places in Curitiba are Bosque Alemao, Bosque Gutierrez, Bosque do Papa, Bosque de Portugal, Catedral Basilica Menor de Nossa Senhora da Luz, Feirinha do largo da ordem, and Fonte de Jerusalem. There are also three main football clubs in the city: Clube Atletico Paranaense, Coritiba Foot Ball Club, and Parana Clube.
Florianopolis is an island city with a population of 386,913. Most of these people live on the Northern half of the island. The city has a strong German and Italian influence even though it was originally settled by the Portuguese. It is known for its white sand beaches, making it a popular destination for South American travelers. The city has two professional soccer teams: Avai FC and Figueirense FC. It is also the hometown of Gustavo Kuerten, tennis star.
Foz do Iguacu has a population of 270,000 and its inhabitants are referred to as iguacunses. It has the second largest colony of Chinese immigrants and the third largest colony of Arabs. It is one of the most frequently visited Brazilian cities and is home to approximately 100 hotels and “pousadas.” There are many tourist attractions in the city, including the Iguassu Falls, which is as large as three Niagra Falls; the Parque Nacional do Iguacu; the Itaipu Dam, the most powerful dam in the world; the Omar Ibn-Al-Khatab mosque, the largest mosque outside the Middle East; and the Bird’s Park and the “Bosque Guarani, the city’s zoo. The climate is sub-tropical, but the weather changes constantly.
