Rio de Janeiro, commonly referred to as Rio, is known for samba, its famous beaches, and its black and cream decorated pavements. The Christ Redeemer Statue is also a well-known landmark. Rio de Janiero also celebrates an annual Carnaval. The population of Rio de Janeiro is about 6,094,183. It is the second largest city in Brazil and was the capital until 1960 when it was replaced by Brasilia. Residents of the city of Rio are referred to as Cariocas. Although Rio ranks as one of the world’s major metropolises, it is one of the most violent cities on the planet and 15% of the city lives in poverty. An average of 80 homicides occur daily largely due to the illegal drug trade and organized crime. Most of the victims are drug dealers battling with each other, not tourists or normal residents.

Other area attractions include the Capela de Sao Francisco de Assis, the Boa Viagem Cathedral, the Lourdes Basilica, the Praca da Estacao, the Municipal Park, the Nossa Sanhora de Fatima church, and the Praca Carlos Chagas.
