Boating safety

The most important thing to remember when chartering a yacht is to be safe. No matter how experienced you may be with boats or water sports, it’s always important to exercise caution around the water. Most boating deaths occur in boats 16ft. and smaller, and many of those boats are anchored at the time, so you should always be on guard. You should take a boating safety course before you head out on the water, especially if you are captaining the boat yourself. Here are some tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe out on the water:

·        Always pay close attention to the weather. If you notice sudden wind shifts, choppy water, or lightening flashes, you could be in the path of a storm. Always bring a portable radio with you so you can check the weather report.
·        Always bring any extra gear you think you might need. A GPS or a map of where you are will prove invaluable if you steer off course. You should also have a flashlight, extra batteries, matches, flares, and a first aid kit. Put these items in a water-safe pouch or a container that floats.
·        Never venture out on the water without telling someone where you are going, how long you will be gone, and who is going with you.
·        Always check your boat, your equipment, the boat balance, the engine, and your fuel level before you head out.
·        Open hatches, run the blower, and check for gasoline smells before starting the engine.
·        Wear light layers and bring rainproof clothing.
·        Stay low and near the center of the boat when you are changing seats in a small vessel.
·        When anchoring, anchor from the bow, not from the stern.
·        Always use an anchor line at least five times longer than the depth of the water.
