There are several questions you should ask yourself before you commit to a hobby like sailing.

• Do you like the outdoors? Sailing can take you from beautiful skies to wind and rain in a short period of time. Be sure that you can withstand the elements.
• Do you like challenges? Although the fundamentals of sailing can be learned fairly quickly, sailing will continually present you with challenges.
• Are you patient? If not, learning to sail can quickly become a chore. Learning to sail can be a great experience if you are open to learning new things.
• How well do you take orders? When learning to sail, it’s crucial that you listen to and obey your instructor.
• Do you have realistic goal for sailing? Start small, like an overnight cruise, before you decide to sail around the world.
• Are you willing to put in the necessary time? Unless you live right on the water, you will have to add in the time it will take you to get to and from the water every time you go out. Sailing has a way of eating up most of your free time, so be sure you are ready to commit.

If you have answered these questions and feel ready to take on the commitment of sailing, then it is time to decide what type of certification you want to obtain.
