There are many different styles of sailboats out on the water today. The following styles of sailboats remain fairly common:
• Catboat: The catboat has one mast set well forward and only possesses one sail regardless of its size.
• Catamaran: The catamaran consists of two hulls joined together by a frame.
• Cutter: The cutter is comparable to a sloop except that the sails are set so that many combinations of areas can be acquired.
• Ketch: The ketch is a two-masted boat where the mizzenmast comes before the helm.
• Schooner: The schooner is a multi-masted sailboat and furls triangular sails. The leading mast is always shorter than the other masts. The schooner was first unveiled among 19th-century ships.
• Sloop: The sloop is a sailing boat rigged with one mast and a single jib (triangular sail) and mainsail.
• Yawl: The yawl has two masts where the smaller, shorter mast is known as the mizzen and is found behind the helm.
