There are several primary parts of a sailboat.
• Mast: cylindrical post that supports the sails and rigging
• Masthead: top of the mast
• Navigation lights: lights at the top of the mast
• Backstay: rope securing the mast in place from the side and rear
• Forestay: secondary rope that secures the mast towards the front
• Stay: rope holding the mast in place from the front
• Keel: centerline of boat that runs the length of the center of the bottom; the backbone of the vessel
• Gallery: guard rail located at the rear of boat
• Rudder: a vertical board or plate for steering the boat
• Rudder head: primary part of the rudder
• Boom: large horizontal poles used to support the sails
• Lift: rope used to hold the boom
• Helm: steering mechanism; wheel controlling the rudder
• Hull: the main body of a sailboat
