Buying a Sailboat

• Attempt different types of sailing. The more familiarity a person has with various types of sailing, the more they will be able to discern what boat they would like to settle with. Day sailing differs from cruising whereas cruising is different than racing. Take time to get to know as many different types of sailing as possible.
• Determine where to go sailing. Sailing can be done on a peaceful inland lake as well as the mighty ocean. With the ocean, there are current considerations as well as the tide that must be taken into account. Where you determine to go sailing has a major impact on which sailboats are properly designed for that particular surface area.
• Assess ability. Be realistic when considering your ability as a sailor. Both physical ability and sailing skills should be considered. Skills will improve with experience, however, physical stamina will deteriorate with age. The key is to purchase a boat that can be handled safely. 
• Try different boats. You will never find the ideal boat, but you can try as many models as possible to get what you are most looking for. Pick a boat that meets your needs, wants, and skills.
• Make a list. Determine beforehand what features you do or do not want in a boat. Make a list of those features and bring it along with you when you hunt for a boat.
• Hire a surveyor. Although this may be costly upfront, you may save money in the end. Make sure you hire a surveyor you are both comfortable with and who also has a good reputation. The boat should not be in the water when the surveyor examines it.
