According to the eponym.com website, the definition for eponym is "a person (real or fictitious) whose name is, or is thought to be, the source of the name of something." In short, if something becomes the source behind the name of something else, the original something becomes an eponym. For example, the Earl of Sandwich gave rise to the word sandwich.
