The term blog is short for the word weblog (web log), which is akin to a journal one keeps in an online format. They can be for private or public view, though generally most blogs are available to the world wide web at large and can range from being personal in content to being focused on specific topics. Some examples of various types of blogs include:

Though blogs started out few in number and intentional and informational in purpose, blogs have exploded in popularity over the last decade, in part due to the development of free and easy to use websites dedicated to this express purpose. Blogs provide the everyman with the opportunity to express his voice and many times, to be heard. Some write on a blog as an easy way to share family anecdotes with grandparents, while others use their blogs as political soapboxes. Weblogs not only allow millions of people to post their thoughts instantaneously, but they also provide a forum for allowing others to interact with those thoughts by way of commenting on individual posts. It is the conversational tone of the blog that lends itself to ease of use by almost everyone.
As weblogs are used by millions and read by millions, the rise of blog tools such as blog search engines have become high in demand in recent years.
