The economy in Brussels is primarily service-oriented. More of their employment comes from commuters from Flanders and Wallonia, than is does from local employment. Brussels has an unemployment rate of 20%, which is higher than any of the other Belgium regions. This is caused by a combination of issues. First, the taxations rate is higher in Brussels than in Flanders or Wallonia. Second, the needs in the labor market are not matched up with the education offered combined with the high percentage of mono-lingual French speakers.

Third, there is a high percentage of immigrants with a below-average education level. And finally, there are sub-standard performances provided by local political institutions.
