» What are the contents in a featherbed?
Featherbeds are typically a feather and down blend, but can sometimes be filled with synthetic clusters. The three main types of featherbeds include:
· 100% white goose- down filled featherbed: This is the most common, as well as, top choice in featherbeds. This gives you the softest feel and is also considered to be the highest quality.
· Duck- down filled: These are the second most common choice of featherbeds. These clusters of feathers are smaller than the goose- down, and therefore, require more to completely fill and reach the same insulation as the goose- down. This makes for a heavier and firmer cushion. One big advantage to this type of featherbed that the goose-down filled does not provide is the support to the neck and back that some people require while they sleep.
· Down- feather blend: This third type of featherbed comes in many variations. The percentage of each component can be found on the label. If it says, “down- feather”, then it has a higher down percentage than feather and vice versa. Some also list the exact ratio of down to feather content.
The shell of each of the three main types of featherbeds come in four main variations:
· Baffle Box- This is the most common type. The down is stitched in boxes to keep it in place and provides optimal comfort and support. This also helps prevent shifting and clumping of the down.
· Channel Construction- In this type, the down is arranged and stitched into columns or channels (either vertical or horizontal).
· Down Topped- This particular type has an added layer of down on the top of the regular feather bed for extra insulation.
· Bag Style- This type of featherbed has no stitching and is basically just a huge bag filled with down feathers. I would suggest avoiding this type because it would inevitably clump and would become very uncomfortable all within the first few minutes of use.
