Day beds were invented by the Egyptians who used them for both sleeping and lounging. The first day beds were made out of palm sticks bound together. Through out history day beds have also been known as
chaise lounges. Today however there is a clear distinction between the two. Chase lounges are no longer used as beds. They are typically a piece of furniture used for sitting or lounging only. Day beds however continue to provide both functions. The look of the two is also very different. Chase Lounges are usually all fabric pieces of furniture closer to a couch than a bed. Day beds are typically made out of either wood or metal and look like a bed. Day beds only have a mattress and no box springs. Under the mattress of a day bed is a metal frame with one layer of springs that are used to support the mattress like a box spring would. The frame connects to the actual structure of the bed and holds the mattress up. The mattress of a day bed sits high off the ground leaving a space underneath. This space is typically used for a trundle bed. A trundle bed is a mattress that is just a little smaller than the day bed mattress; it is on a metal frame and springs similar to the frame of the day bed but with rollers so that it can be stored under the day bed. Some trundle beds can actually be raised to match the height of the day bed mattress. So that you can either make one large bed or have two separate ones.
