The alternatives to a bunk bed are a twin, full/double, queen, and king-sized bed. Among bunk beds, however, you will have an equally large number of options.

Detachable/Stackable Bunk Bed: While the standard bunk bed is one bed placed permanently on top of another, another popular option is stackable bunk beds, which you can separate. The versatility offered by the detachable bunk bed is very attractive. If you want to use the bunks as two standalone beds, simply lift off the top bunk, and if you want to convert two standalone beds to bunks, simply lift the bunk back on top and insert the dowel or pin as needed to secure the bunks.

Loft Bed: A loft bed looks like a bunk bed without the bottom bunk, and thus, it greatly increases storage space underneath the bed. In many cases, you can also insert a second bed underneath the loft to convert it to a standard bunk bed.

Full-Twin Bunk Bed: A full-twin bunk bed has a full/double bed on the bottom of the bunk and a twin bed on the top. Thus, the bottom of the bunk bed is wider than the top. This style takes up more space than a standard bunk bed, but if you have an older child who prefers a larger bed, you might want to consider a full-twin bunk. You can also purchase full-twin bunk beds in both detachable and nondetachable models.

Trundle Bed: Like a bunk bed, a trundle bed is actually two beds, but in a trundle bed, the bottom mattress fits snugly underneath the top mattress. Thus, you can slide the mattress back under the bed during the day, and the bed looks like a standard twin bed. You can also remove the bottom mattress altogether and increase your storage space. The disadvantages of a trundle bed, however, are that, unlike a bunk bed, a trundle is not always ready, requires twice the width of a bunk bed, and forces sleepers to sleep next to each other (one is a few inches above the other) rather than one above the other.

In addition to these broad differences between bunk beds, you can also choose between beds of different heights, colors, and styles. For example, do you want the ladder at the foot of the bed or on the side of the bed? Do you want a wood frame or a metal frame?
