Brass is a metal alloy of copper, zinc and sometimes small amounts of other elements. The ratio of copper and zinc can vary, but it is usually about seventy percent copper and thirty percent zinc. The color of brass is yellow-gold, and not to mention, wonderfully shiny. The alloy is found in all kinds of manufactured products (fasteners, valves) and automotive products (gears). Brass is a popular decorating accent on doors and windows and has also found a place in many homes in candlesticks, bookends, picture frames, and lighting fixtures. It must be noted that all things appearing to be brass are not 100% brass: steel can be plated with brass creating the look of brass at a lower cost to the consumer. A simple test with a magnet will reveal a brass-plated object with a steel core.
