Many people have enjoyed the incredibly relaxing effects of a whirlpool. The hot water being circulated throughout the tub by powerful pumps is a welcome remedy to a stressed mind and a sore back. However, when someone is considering purchasing or installing a whirlpool tub, many more questions arise. What are the differences between whirlpools, spas, and hot tubs?  What are the benefits involved? Can a normal bathtub be turned into a whirlpool? How is a whirlpool properly maintained?

A whirlpool is a tub fitted with an electric pump and water jets. The jets, installed in the side of the bath, re-circulate water through pipes using an underwater suction. This pumping causes air to be mixed with the water and can create turbulence ranging from a gentle to a vigorous massage.

The difference between a whirlpool and a spa is that spas only pump air through the pipes, producing bubbles, and are left filled on a regular basis. Hot tubs also remain full, while whirlpools are filled and drained with each use. Also, because of the recirculation of water through the pipes, bath bubbles and oils should not be used in whirlpools, at the risk of bacterial growth.

Aside from relaxation, the advantages of whirlpools range from relief from strains to help with arthritis and migraines. However, many people think that because they already have a bathtub they cannot enjoy the fun and benefits of whirlpools. On the contrary, most tubs can be converted into whirlpools by installing the pipes, pump, and jets. Or, with a new model, a consumer could choose to get a whirlpool complete with stereo system and DVD player. Whatever method a customer chooses to take, it is agreed that whirlpools can be excellent additions to any home.
