Using a whirlpool – While using a whirlpool, remember that bath bubbles, oils and salts should never be used. Due to the recirculation of water through the pipes, bacteria can grow from the use of these substances. Illnesses and infections have also been linked to improper use and cleaning of whirlpools.

Cleaning a whirlpool – In order to prevent bacterial growth in the whirlpool piping, the system should be cleaned at least every couple of weeks. This procedure can be followed to properly clean and maintain the whirlpool:

-                     Adjust the jets so that they will be completely submerged in the water.

-                     Completely fill the unit with hot water.

-                     Add two teaspoons of a low-foaming dishwasher detergent and four ounces of household bleach to the water.

-                     Allow the whirlpool to run for ten to fifteen minutes.

-                     Drain and refill the tub with clean, cold water.

-                     Run the unit again for approximately five to ten minutes.

-                     Wipe Dry.

Remember that you cannot rely on normal household cleaners to completely clean and disinfect the whirlpool. If your whirlpool is made of acrylic (as many are), the following tips are also effective in maintaining the appearance.

-                     The surface can be cleaned with any non-abrasive detergent or dishwashing liquid.

-                     Car wax may be used to add luster to the surface and remove minor scratches.

-                     The use of an acrylic surface cleaner not only adds shine but also creates a dust-repellent surface.

-                     Paint thinner (or turpentine) removes paint marks.

-                      A spatula covered with a moist cloth removes plaster residue without harming the surface.
