Using a sauna does assist in weight loss. However, most of the weight loss comes from the secretion of bodily fluids (sweat). This kind of weight loss is minor and is quickly added back on once you replenish your system with some kind of drink.

Sweat bathing is used for weight loss primarily with professional athletes who need to shed pounds in a condensed amount of time. An example of this would be a boxer or wrestler who needs to lose pounds for weigh in.

The only muscle being used while in a sauna is the heart. Unlike taking a walk or running, a sweat bath does not use a tremendous amount of energy from other muscles thus resulting in more noticeable weight loss. It is recommended to use a sauna as a way to relax and relieve stress more than a way to lose weight. Although it is possible to do, losing weight is not the primary function of a sweat bath.
