» How long have saunas been around?
Saunas have been around for at least 1000 years. Finland is one of the most notable places of origin, although many eastern cultures have used saunas as well. In Finland you will probably find the most passionate people in regards to using a sauna. Using a sauna is a serious part of their culture and it is not uncommon to find co-ed public saunas.
In the United States the sauna is relegated mostly to recreational facilities, gyms, luxury hotels, and homeowners. We have the Finnish immigrants to thank for the American sauna. Although it is not as popular in America, the sauna has become a staple activity for people who are aware of their general health and fitness.
Different versions of the sauna appear in different cultures. The Native American version of the “sweat bath” is known as the “inipi”. Other versions include: the Russian bania, and the Turkish “hamam” steam bath.
