Using a Bidet

Most bidet owners use their bidets after going to the bathroom, but it is perhaps more accurate to think of a bidet as a localized shower; you can use a bidet whenever you want to clean your genitals (i.e. during menstruation) or bottom. The usage instructions in this article, however, focus on the primary use of a bidet, that is, after you use the bathroom.

After you go to the bathroom, wipe with toilet paper once if necessary, and then move to the bidet. Straddle the bidet (the word “bidet” is related to a French word for “straddle the pony”), sitting on the rim and facing the handles.

Turn on the water stream slowly, and adjust the temperature and direction of the water. Then, alter the strength of the water stream until it reaches the desired level, but be careful not to use water that is either too hot or too powerful. After a few seconds or minutes, turn off the water and (if you do not have a bidet equipped with an air dryer) pat yourself dry using toilet paper or a towel.

Some bidet manufacturers offer suggestions on alternative uses for the bidet, so watch for those tips. You can use your bidet as a urinal, but it is better to urinate in the toilet and use the bidet for its specified purpose. If your bidet is clean, you can even use it as a baby bath. As children grow and want to use the bidet for themselves, teach them to use it correctly and supervise them until you are confident they can use the bidet.

When it is time to clean your bathroom, you can clean your bidet in the same manner that you clean your toilet. The bidet will generally not become as unsanitary as a toilet, but you should still clean wipe down the exterior and clean the interior with at least a disinfectant spray.
