A few of the important traditions in Balinese culture that have been celebrated for years within society and are now beginning to be appreciated by tourists and other outsiders are the weddings, music, and food in Bali. Each of these ceremonies and experiences is, like most other aspects of traditional Balinese life, rooted in religious tradition.
The original purpose of music in Balinese culture was to serve religious ceremonies; however this vibrant expression of Balinese life is now used to accompany dances, theatre, and other aspects of society. Weddings, too, have always had deep social meaning. Utilizing unique symbolism and excitement, Balinese weddings are now very popular even for people from other countries. One aspect that is part of these weddings and other ceremonial events is the food. Because of the fertile volcanic soil that Bali is known for, food is more than a way of existence; it is an art. It is embedded in the religious traditions of the past and the culture of the present, as are music and the wedding ritual.
