Music is a thrilling part of Balinese culture; its complexity and vibrancy are unique to the island and symbolic of its importance within society. Originally, music in Bali was used in religious ceremonies and rituals and thus was very important. However, it is now used for dances, theater, celebrations, and more. Generally, the music is played through the means of the traditional orchestra, the gamelan, and has percussion, string, woodwind, and many other instruments. Even xylophones and metallophones are part of this beautiful cacophony. Many famous musical artists have even written pieces inspired by Balinese music after having come into contact with it.

For the visitor to Bali, music is an important part of the culture to experience. Attend a dance at which you have the opportunity to hear a gamelan, or seek out a tourist group that will allow you the chance to hear Balinese music. Or, if you are very interested in Balinese music, you can even take some lessons while in Bali – an opportunity of a lifetime.
