This is often something that many parents find a little overwhelming. But getting your baby started on solid foods once they are ready is really very simple. There is also no real right or wrong way to do it. So relax, take a deep breath and get ready to introduce your baby to the world of solid foods. It is usually best to get babies started on rice cereal as their first solid food. Rice cereal is very low in allergens which means that most babies will be able to tolerate it, that's why it's a good first food. A good way to begin the introduction to solids is to have one feeding of solids a day whenever it is best for your schedule. A good way to start is to breast or bottle feed the baby and then mix 1 or 2 teaspoons of rice cereal with either formula or breast milk. The mixture should have a liquid consistency. Feed the baby the rice cereal with a baby spoon. At first the baby isn't likely to eat very much but will be getting used to keeping the food in their mouth and swallowing. Once the baby is eating all of the cereal you can increase the amount by a few tablespoons at a time also being sure to gradually thicken the consistency of the cereal. Another feeding can also be added once the baby begins to eat more cereal. It is usually best to wait to introduce other solids until the baby is eating about a half a cup of cereal a day.
