After your baby has successfully mastered rice cereal it is time to move onto other solids; fruits, vegetables, and meats. It is strictly up to your personal preference as to whether you decide to make your own baby food or buy jarred food. Different sources will give parents different instructions as to how to go about introducing fruits, vegetables, and meats into a baby's diet. Many people believe it is best to introduce yellow fruits and vegetables first because they are easier on the digestive system while others say green vegetables should come first followed by yellow vegetables, fruits, and meats so that the baby doesn't develop a taste for sweeter foods first and decide he or she only wants those. Whichever path is chosen it is best to introduce one food at a time and continue that food for at least 3 to 6 days before adding another one in order to check for any allergic reaction to the food. Signs of an allergic reaction can be: rash, stomach ache, or diarrhea. Don't keep a certain food from your baby's diet just because you don't care for it. Give your baby the deciding vote. If your baby refuses to eat a certain food discontinue that food for the time being but try to re-introduce it at a later time. It is likely that your baby's bowel movements will change in consistency once solids are introduced. If it appears your baby is straining to have a bowel movement or the stool appears too firm it could be from the rice cereal, bananas, or even applesauce and you might want to consider decreasing those foods.
