What Is Teething?

At some point, your baby's toothless grin is going to become a "tooth-full" smile, and this will happen through the process of teething. Most babies begin teething when they are between six months and eight months old, although it is also normal for babies to begin teething earlier or later. The two middle teeth on the bottom usually emerge from the bottom gum first. While some babies appear to teeth painlessly, other babies become intermittently fussy while they are teething, because of the discomfort of the teeth pushing through the gums. There are twenty "baby teeth," also called "deciduous teeth" -- like trees that lose their leaves in winter, children lose their deciduous teeth later on and replace them with 32 adult teeth. Most children have all twenty baby teeth by the time they are thirty months old (2 and 1/2 years). Teething is also called "cutting a tooth."
