You'll want to make sure the nursery, and your whole house, is prepared before the baby arrives. This means getting it done well before your due date, if possible. Here is a list of baby basics to take with you when shopping for the nursery or registering for baby gifts:
1. Sleeping Basics
• cradle, bassinet, or crib
• bumper pad - to protect baby from bumping into the hard sides of the bed
• fitted sheets
• receiving blankets - you'll want several, you'll use these often
• warm blanket, quilt, or comforter
• tape or CD player
2. Diapering Basics
• cloth or disposable diapers
• baby wipes and/or wash cloths
• ointment or diaper rash treatment
• diaper pail with locking lid (the Diaper Genie is popular)
• changing table (optional but helpful)
3. Clothing Basics
• t-shirts
• nightgowns or pajamas
• at least one machine-washable sweater
• several pairs of socks
• hats
• mild laundry soap
• "onesies" - one-piece jumpsuits that are perfect under other clothes
4. Feeding Basics
• bottles with nipples and caps (12 bottles if bottle feeding, just a few if breast feeding)
• breast pump, nursing bras, and pads (if breast feeding)
• extra cloth diapers or towels for burping
5. Bathing Basics
• baby bathtub
• extra mild bath soap
• baby shampoo

• car seat
• stroller
• soft baby carrier (car seats are often used for this)

• mobile for crib
