Of course, your primary concern in the nursery should be to make sure it's a safe place for your baby. Here are some basic tips to keep it a safe and healthy environment:

• Keep drapery and blind cords out of baby's reach. Don't forget that your baby might be able to reach them from the changing table or eventually when he or she can stand up in the crib!
• Place a functional smoke detector in or near the nursery.
• Be sure there are window guards securely in place. These will prevent your child from falling out the window.
• Do not place the crib, playpen, or any other children's furniture near a window.
• Put plug protectors in unused electrical outlets.
• Don't buy a toy box that has a heavy, hinged lid. This could trap your child.
• Instead of using a vaporizer, use a cool air humidifier; this will keep your child from getting burned. Clean the humidifier frequently and empty it when it is not being used. This will prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.
