Potty Training a Boy

The bad news about potty training boys is that they take longer to potty train than girls; the good news is that in most cases they don't take too much longer. There is no clear reason why boys don't get potty training as quickly as girls. Some experts believe it is because in most cases the mother is the primary potty trainer and females have different "equipment" than males. But even in situations where dads are involved in the potty training process it can take longer than potty training a girl would. Parents are advised not to worry and to watch for the signs their son is ready to begin potty training. It is also strongly recommended that boys are first taught to urinate sitting down. This is mostly because urine and bowl movements have a tendency to come out at the same time. It will also alleviate the little boy from becoming more engrossed in aiming his urine than learning how to go in the potty. Once he has completely mastered potty training he can then begin trying it standing up. A male role model such as dad, an uncle, an older brother, a grandfather, or a close family friend should let the little boy go with him into the restroom and watch how it's done and then try it himself in his potty chair. If he has a little reluctance some people float cheerios or other small floatable objects in order for a little "target practice". This makes it a little less overwhelming for the child. This is usually a process that takes some time for the child to master so it is a good idea to be prepared to clean up messes.
