Getting Back the Results

If the results you receive back from the newborn screening tests are abnormal, do not panic or become overly alarmed. The tests only provide preliminary information that will need to be followed by more specific diagnostic testing, which differ from the screening test. This does not necessarily indicate that your infant has the disorder identified. Different labs have different procedures for informing families and pediatricians of the testing results. Ask your infant's doctor the best way to get back your results and how to anticipate receiving them. Some labs send the results to the hospital while others allow doctors to retrieve the results via the computer or phone.

If the newborn screening test does substantiate that your newborn has a disorder, your infant's doctor may refer you to a specialist for further consultation and treatment. Parents need to realize, however, that often dietary restrictions and supplements, along with adequate medical attention, can prevent most of the acute physical and mental problems that were connected with metabolic disorders years ago. It may be wise to have your other children screened for a particular disorder found in one child that another child may not have been screened for.
