By the end of the first month, most babies can hold their heads up for a short period of time. They can also move their heads from side to side. Babies prefer the human face to other shapes, and they can bring their hands to their faces. One month old babies make jerky arm movements and have strong reflex movements. They can focus on an item that is eight to twelve inches away, and their eyes might occasionally cross. They prefer black and white or high-contrast patterns. They also might turn towards familiar sounds or voices, respond to loud sounds, and blink at bright lights. Their heads will flop backwards if they're not supported, and they like to keep their hands in tight fists. They like to be handled softly, and they like to touch soft things.
