Colic in babies can be described as uncontrollable crying periods from a perfectly healthy baby. Babies who have colic will have crying spells or fussy periods that last 3 hours or longer and has the crying spells or fussiness at least 3 days in a week. Usually these crying or fussy periods occur at the same time of day each time. Colic can show up in newborns under the age of 3 weeks but it can also appear when a baby is a month or two old and it generally disappears before the baby turns 8 months old. Colic is more evident in babies who are bottle fed however it does occasionally appear in a baby who is breastfed. Colic is obviously distressing to the infant but it can also make life miserable for the new parents and other siblings as well. Although there is not much doctors can do for a colicky baby most parents feel better if their baby is thoroughly examined to rule out any other possible reasons for the crying such as a hernia.
