There is really no specific cause known for colic. There are several different causes that people believe to be the cause of colic in infants. Listed below are some of them:
• Gas: Years ago colic was believed to be caused by gas that was trapped in a baby's digestive tract. Many people still see this as the cause for colicky babies and it even has some scientific research to back it up but it is no longer used as the universal cause of colic.
• Sensory Overload: It is also believed by some that colic is caused by a baby who is overwhelmed with his or her surroundings. This along with having an immature immune system is what they believe makes the infant cry uncontrollably.
• Lactose Intolerant: Some babies whether they are bottle or breastfed can be lactose intolerant. Not being able to digest the breast milk or formula can be painful for the baby causing colic.
• Mothers Diet: For babies who are breastfed and develop colic the cause could be linked to the diet that their mother is eating. Certain foods have been linked to possibly causing colic in infants that are breastfed such as cow's milk, caffeine, alcohol, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and garlic. Mothers who breastfeed and whose babies appear to be colicky they are usually instructed to not eat any of the possible irritating foods for a week to see if that eases the colic.
