What to take to the hospital

The first time you see your baby after he or she has been weighed and washed, he or she will probably be bundled up in a blanket wearing a tiny hospital gown and a cap. It is important to remember that babies are very sensitive in their first few days and need to be kept warm. Bundling them in blankets reminds them of the womb and provides a sense of security in the transition period of life after the womb. Considering that your baby will be bundled for the first day or so of his or her life, you may not want to bother with putting on "real" clothes at the hospital. Also, the umbilical cord may be still be clamped and you might not want, for example, an elastic waist band compressing the remaining cord. But when it is time to take the baby home, most new moms eagerly unpack a carefully selected outfit. Tiny day gowns made of finely woven cotton with beautiful smocking or embroidery are popular choices for both baby boys and girls. Many of these are considered unisex. Very feminine designs may catch the eye of a mother of a baby girl. Masculine designs may include adorable little caps. Some parents opt for more practical, every day sleeping attire or every day outfits for the trip home. It is a matter of preference and style.
